The vocabulary of rare sneakers — sample, player exclusive, friends & family and more — explained clearly.
SampleSample
A pre-production pair made to test or present a design before — or instead of — a public release. Not built for retail; typically only a handful exist.
Retail / General Release (GR)GR
The mass-produced version sold in stores — the baseline every rarer variant is measured against.
Player Exclusive (PE)PE
Made specifically for a professional athlete, in colours and details never sold to the public. Numbers are tiny.
Friends & Family (F&F)F&F
A very small run gifted to insiders, collaborators or family — never retailed. Among the rarest categories in sneakers.
Deadstock (DS)DS
Unworn and in original condition, ideally with the original box and tags. “OG all” means all original accessories are present.
PrototypePrototype
An early physical test of a design, often unfinished or hand-modified — usually a one-off.
Dev Kit / Sample SizeDev Kit
A development or sample-size pair (often US 9 for footwear) used internally by the brand, never sold.
Promo / Booth SamplePromo
Produced for an event, showroom or promotion — not for sale to the public.
GrailGrail
A collector’s most-wanted piece — the rare item at the very top of a wishlist.
Archive GradeArchive Grade
